The Phoenix Open closes and whilst none of us fantasy golfers were really in the mix, an exciting finish nonetheless. We had the last guy to win a major (YE Yang) blow up on the 17th whilst leading, Phil Mickelson going low (pity about his shitty round on Moving Day), and young gun Rickie Fowler having a red hot go.
If you remember what I said last week about this tournament identifying future stars, then take note of Hunter Mahan's gutsy win this week. If this guy has a couple more wins this season, then I believe he can really become a force for the next decade. He was a Captains Pick in both Azinger's Ryder Cup team and Freddy Couples Presidents Cup outfit, so these guys obviously see something special in the young Hunter Mahan as well.
A fairly close affair this week, with Gordy taking the mantle for the second week in a row, to continue leading the overall. Rick came up the rear, but that probably had something to do with his latent homosexuality (see last post). Don't know about you, but to most normal people, there is something wrong with a guy in his mid forties paying money to see George Michaels. Rick, it's time to throw out your Duran Duran, Boy George & Spandau Ballet, unless of course you are going to use your full 10 picks for Brian Gay this year.
Anyway over to the Honda Classic this week and teh Skinny jackpots to $108, the overall to $72 and we all owe $45.
The Honda Classic started out life in 1972 as the Jackie Gleason Inverrary Classic. Hell, Bob Hope had his tournament, Bing Crosby his clambake on the Monterey Peninsula and Jackie Gleason was going to have his tournament too! Along with the other Celeb based tournaments, this used to attract the top players. That is before the golfers started getting rock star money, back when they needed the exposure.
These days, the Honda struggles to attract top fields, despite being in the backyard of many of the pro's residences in Florida. As the 1st leg of the Florida swing, it competes with the WGC CA Championship at the Blue Monster Doral (which pays top money), as well as the Bay Hill Invitational. The Bay Hill is Arnold Palmer's tournament, and if you get invited by The King, you fucking play, whether or not if you got a new TV and Home Theatre System and putting it together put you in a bad mood.
Whilst the likes Mickelson, Woods, Furyk, Stricker and Ogilvy always skip this event, there are some pretty good golfers teeing it up at the Honda. It's just that they are either faded stars, or relative newcomers still trying to make their name. The problem for we fantasy golfers at this point in time, is that the players have one eye on Augusta and most of what they are doing now, is at least partly focused on the 1st major of the year, rather than the here and now.
Good luck all. And Rick, I know it was Mardis Gras weekend, but do yourself a favour and give up the gay
music and lifestyle.
